Paul Kalkbrenner (born 11 June 1977) is a German musician and producer of electronic music. He grew up in Lichtenberg, Berlin, in what was then East Germany, and was thirteen when the Berlin Wall fell. He began DJing with his friend Sascha Funke at youth clubs, and released his first tracks on Ellen Allien's BPitch Control label in 1999. He starred as DJ Ickarus in the 2008 film "Berlin Calling," directed by Hannes Stöhr, and produced its platinum-selling soundtrack including the hit "Sky and Sand" (with vocals by his brother Fritz Kalkbrenner), which spent 129 weeks on the German singles charts. In 2014, the German government asked him to perform at the Brandenburg Gate for the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, where he played to over 400,000 people. He was the first techno artist to play Tomorrowland's main stage. He has released nine studio albums and founded his own label, Paul Kalkbrenner Musik.
